Remember today when you pretended to try and run me over as a joke and I didn’t even look twice, I just walked a little bit faster? Yea, that’s because cars (taxis mostly) try to run me over everyday. NOT as a joke. So sorry I didn’t see you.
Honestly, if you stopped your car and let me cross the road I definitely would have looked twice. That certainly would have been something new.

You can't afford to look twice, can you? I recall it being like playing Chicken and if you look, you give up the right of way, and will surely die. Ignoring them makes them have to not hit you, so you live. But it's been a while since I've been on the continent... things could have changed!
